McClung Museum Enhanced Learning Homeschool Programs The McClung Museum is now offering Enhanced Learning Homeschool Programs. These 90 minute sessions cost .00 per student and give students a chance to experience hands-on learning in the museum's galleries. The session dates, times, and subjects are highlighted below. Online reservations are required, payment must be made in advance, and the fee is nonrefundable. With the exception of the Human Origins program, students must be K-12 in age.  Please note that caregivers attend the program for free (optional), but each student must have an individual ticket purchased under their name. September 19, 2016, 1-2:30 pm – Geology & Fossil History of Tennessee – introduction to types of rocks, stratigraphy and dating and plate tectonics; also processes of fossilization, adaptations, and environmental change over time. Students examine actual fossils. October 3, 2016, 1-2:30 pm – Ancient Egypt – geography, environment and agriculture; writing; government; religion, including gods & goddesses, temples, tombs, mummification and the afterlife; daily life. October 24, 2016, 1-2:30 pm – Human Origins: Searching for our Fossil Ancestors – limited to 5th grade and older who have basic science knowledge of heredity [DNA, mutations]; fossils of human ancestors and non/ancestors are examined, also early stone tools and art. November 7, 2016, 1-2:30 pm – Ancient Rome and Ancient China – Life on the frontier of the Roman Empire; Chinese history through art and objects, including agriculture, the Silk Road, religions, inventions. December 5, 2016, 1-2:30 pm – Knoxville Unearthed – how historical archaeology at important Knoxville sites has added to the documentary record of 18th and 19th century Knoxville. January 9, 2017, 1-2:30 pm – Archaeology & Native Peoples of Tennessee – Life in Tennessee before and after the end of the Ice Age, including the beginning of agriculture, trade, art, Cherokee society, Sequoyah and the syllabary, and the Trail of Tears. February 6, 2017, 1-2:30 pm – Divine Felines: Cats of Ancient Egypt – Sculptures, jewelry, and other art representing cats, lions, and a few dogs focus on ancient Egyptian art and the use of animals both practically and as religious symbols. Activity included. March 6, 2017, 1-2:30 pm – Freshwater Mussels of Tennessee – Ecology, life cycle, classification, and human use of freshwater mussels, which are important ecological species, in Tennessee. April 3, 2017, 1-2:30 pm – The Civil War in Knoxville – What happened in Knoxville in 1863 and its importance in the Civil War. Includes guided visit to Fort Dickerson, weather permitting (students must have their own transportation to Fort Dickerson).   FAQs Can younger children in a family attend? Younger children in a family can attend, but the program will not be addressed to them. Parents can bring strollers, but depending upon the number of participants, they may have to leave the stroller outside the gallery. What are my parking options for the program? Free parking is available in the front of the museum on Circle Park Drive. Each vehicle should stop at the Visitor Information Station and request a permit for 2 hours to park. Place the permit on the dashboard of the vehicle.  Where can I contact the organizer with any questions? Yes, as long as the participants are K–12. Can I update my registration information? Yes, simply log back into Eventbrite to update your registration information. No, you do not have to bring your printed ticket to the event, but you can if you would like.  What is the refund policy? All reservation fees are unrefundable.
