Das Nuvens Pra Baixo
CineCLACS presents a sneak peek of a documentary by Marco Antonio Gonçalves and Eliska Altmann based on the published diary of Carolina Maria de Jesus, a resident of a favela in São Paulo. Fifty years following the publication of the diary, the filmmakers engage with her account by documenting conversations with five Rio de Janeiro favela residents. The film will be followed by a conversation with Gonçalves and Altmann, moderated by filmmaker and CLACS professor Peter Lucas. About the film: DAS NUVENS PRA BAIXO (Portuguese with English Subtitles) In 1961, for the first time in Brazil's history, a woman, Carolina Maria de Jesus, living in a slum in São Paulo, writes about her daily life and has her diary published. Fifty years later the directors of the film, inspired by this diary, go to look for characters that somehow dialogue with Carolina. In the slum Complexo da Maré, in Rio de Janeiro, five women reveal different experiences and visions of their life in the slum, thus creating continuities and discontinuities with the poetic and critical vision of life expressed by Carolina de Jesus. The voices and visions of these women, Geandra, Iraci, Edilma, Maria da Paz and Vanessa, provide an revigorating and poetically rich image of life in the slums that escapes from the current themes of violence and male dominance, revealing a slum literally lived through a feminine soul. Through the voice of Geandra, an actress, the words written by Carolina gain a new life, in dialogue with the contemporary voices of the other equally strong characters of the women from the Maré complex. Speakers Eliska Altmann is a Brazilian Sociologist and filmmaker, Professor at the Graduate Program of Social Sciences, Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro. She is the general coordinator of the selection of films and organization of the Film and Anthropology Forum of the Rio International Ethnographic Film Festival. She worked as a researcher for several documentaries such as Edificio Master of Eduardo Coutinho. She is the author of "Brazil imagined in Latin America: critiques of Glauber Rocha's and Walter Salles' films" and Director of the "CineCríticos" - a website dedicated to film criticism in Latin America(www.cinecríticos.com.br). Marco Antonio Gonçalves is a Brazilian Anthropologist and filmmaker, Professor at the Graduate Program of Anthropology and Sociology, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and Director of Nextimagem (Centre of Experimental Image and Ethnography). He published several books and articles on the subject of Image and Anthropology (such as 'The Imagined Real: Ethnography, Cinema and Surrealism in Jean Rouch; Sensorial Thought in Eiseinsten´s oeuvre: Perspective, Cinema and Anthropology, e.o.) Peter Lucas teaches at the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS), the Draper Progam, and Tisch Open Arts. His publications include, Viva Favela: Photojournalism, Visual Inclusion, and Human Rights in Brazil and Action for Disarmament: Ten Things you Can Do. In 2012, Peter Lucas was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship for his film projects. In 2015 he was invited to the Sundance Film Festival as a Documentary Fellow. He is the creative producer for Hooligan Sparrow, the opening night film at the upcoming Human Rights Watch Film Festival this June. *The conversation will be held in English. Writing Opinion Pieces That Compel
Everybody may be entitled to their opinion, but how many are really catching anyone's attention? The Internet and social media have given a platform to every individual or group with the least bit to say. All too often, those opinions can be missed – or easily dismissed. But some sites and publications do value a well-written opinion piece. Newspapers like the Cambridge Times, Guelph Mercury and Waterloo Region Record dedicate pages to editorial from people and organizations in their communities. An opinion piece in your local paper may reach thousands; well written, it can raise awareness, spark discussion and, just maybe, win people to your cause. This half-day workshop will introduce participants to the basics of effective opinion writing. Using examples from local newspapers, we'll look at: The general purpose and structure of an opinion piece Selecting a topic and your specific angle Bolstering opinion with facts A non-adversarial approach to persuading others How to make your column compelling Participants are encouraged to bring an idea for an opinion piece to the workshop. About the Trainer: Michael Strickland is a strategic storyteller – part communications strategist, part wordsmith – with degrees in rhetorical theory. He spent half of his 30-year career as a journalist, helping to craft stories on a range of topics for newspapers and television. The Barakah Effect: Prophetic Leadership and Productivity for Professionals
The Barakah Effect is a practical one day workshop that focuses on how to lead yourself, and lead others - from a Prophetic perspective. "Barakah is the attachment of divine goodness to a thing, so if it occurs in something little, it increases it. And if it occurs in something much it benefits it. And the greatest fruits of barakah in all things are to use that barakah in the obedience of Allah (SWT)" - Imam Raghib What is the purpose of this workshop? My name is Mohammed Faris (ProductiveMuslim.com), and together with Omar Usman we've launched a new initiative called The Barakah Effect that helps Muslim Professionals practically implement our Prophetic teachings in our professional lives. We've all had conversations where we say things like, "I have to turn off my Islam when I get to work." And by that we don't mean that we hide the fact that we're Muslim. It means that we have to act like a different person. We have to put aside our faith values such as humility, selflessness, and things like shunning praise and credit. Instead, we feel like we have to be selfish in the name of business. We do this because we're taught you have to play the game to succeed. But what if there was another way? What if we could stop compartmentalizing our faith and spirituality? What if we didn't have to turn if off when we clocked in? It's our firm belief that the best of the best teachings in leadership and productivity ultimately come from the most productive man that ever lived and the most influential leader of all times. However, for many years, his teachings have become disconnected in a way that we no longer think how to apply the lessons in our professional lives - or worse, we think that we simply can't apply them. I remember having a conversation at my workplace with an Investment fund manager who was managing a multi-million dollar investment fund on behalf of the bank I was working for. Now this wasn't just a regular bank - but this was actually an Islamic bank, in an Islamic country, with Muslim employees. I asked her a simple question: "Do you pray istikharah before making an investment decision?" My question was met with blank stare. She never considered it. In fact, no one in her industry has ever taught her to consider it.. What's interesting, is that she was a deeply spiritual person who was known and respected for her piety. This made me realise how far we've come in compartmentalizing our faith. We forgot (or even don't know how) to let the Barakah enter the workplace. The funny thing is, everyone has observed Barakah - including non-Muslims. They just happen to call it different things - like serendipity, or "karma." They talk about putting good things "into the universe" and letting the "universe reward you." We know that what they observed is actually Barakah in action. And we have the blueprint to unlock it based on the teachings of our faith. That's our unfair advantage. That's where this workshop comes in. We want to help every Muslim professional live a life full of Barakah - a whole life. From the moment of waking up until going to sleep. How do we get the Barakah in our lives to help us lead ourselves, live a balanced life, and turn around and bring that to our organizations and teams? The Deen and Dunya Conundrum We often put "deen" and "dunya" at conflict with one another. In other words, if we succeed in our worldly life, it comes at the expense of the afterlife. The Qur'an, however, teaches us the opposite. It commands us to supplicate ambitiously for both. "Our Lord, give us good in this world and in the Hereafter, and protect us from the torment of the Fire" (2:201). It's our firm belief that following the Prophetic models of leadership and productivity will help us to not only better our relationship with our Creator - but become a top performer professionally in the process. A Glimpse at What You'll Take Away From This Workshop: Developing a daily system for yourself that keeps you at peak performance - spiritually, mentally, and physically. Feel fulfilled. Break out of the productivity trap of looking for new apps and hacks to constantly maximize your output. Instead, learn how to *multiply* your efforts by tapping into the power of Barakah to power through your every day challenges the obstacles holding you back. What did the Prophet's (s) day look like? What can we emulate from it? How do we apply his daily habits and routines that to a modern day workplace? How to not just delegate, but empower people around you. Learn the intricate tricks Shaytan plays on us to paralyze us with fear - making it hard for us to be decisive, or even speak up in a meeting at work. What tangible and practical things did the Prophet (s) do to develop the people around him? How did the Prophet (s) lead the un-leadable? Deal with difficult people? Dealing with failure, setbacks, and when things don't go as planned. What does a Prophetic leadership style look like? And how is it applied to a modern professional environment? Authentically implementing your spiritual values in an environment that doesn't prioritize faith. Balancing humility with ambition and assertiveness. What Prophetic work/life balance looks like in regards to your self, family, and community. Instructors Mohammed Faris Mohammed is an internationally sought speaker, coach, and author who spearheaded the niche of productivity and Islam. His most notable accolade is as the Founder of ProductiveMuslim.com, the popular online platform, blog, and productivity training organisation that serves the "e-Ummah" worldwide. Gershwin. Irving Berlin. Duke Ellington. Join songstress Corinne Mammana as she takes you on a musical journey through the lives and legends of some of the most brilliant composers from The Great American Songbook. Sophisticated and colorful arrangements by 8 time Grammy nominated jazz guitarist, Frank DiBussolo will be accompanying Corinne's stunning vocals. "Mammana applies her superior technique gracefully, carefully, tastefully and intelligently... There's nothing forced here, which is as it should be, and she fits in wonderfully with DiBussolo's understated guitar," describes Bruce Klauber of JazzTimes. Don't miss this class-act duo in an afternoon of Swinging Songs: Lives and Legends of The Great American Songbook.
"Corinne Mammana bridges a sometimes difficult gap between what is obviously her seriously and classically trained vocal instrument, as applied to a lightly swinging book of songs. Her superb technique is a dead giveaway. But Mammana applies her superior technique gracefully, carefully, tastefully and intelligently," describes Bruce Klauber in a recent article in JazzTimes. The songstress originally hails from the Philadelphia area and holds an extensive theatre background including several appearances off-Broadway. She is passionate about fusing together jazz, Broadway and classical music. Corinne most recently appeared on WFMZ 69 News for Music Monday with Eve Tannery, which included a live television performance with 8 time Grammy nominated guitarist Frank DiBussolo (http://www.wfmz.com/news/Music-Monday-Corinne-Mammana/25467594). In the Lehigh Valley, Corinne can be found performing with her jazz quartet and duo twice a month at the Historic Hotel Bethlehem. Another frequent stop is the charming Jessica's Tea Room in Northampton. Corinne also enjoys performing for local charity events, including the National Alliance on Mental Illness' Night at the Theatre and the Saucon Valley Rotary Club Casino Night. Other Lehigh Valley appearances include Allentown Symphony Hall, Lafayette Jazz Bar and Godfrey Daniels. Off-Broadway, Corinne performed solo at the Duplex Cabaret Theatre and Golden Fleece Ltd, and regionally at Busch Gardens Williamsburg, Virginia. In the Philadelphia region, Corinne performed leading and supporting roles at Media Theatre, The Red Room at Society Hill Playhouse, City Theatre Company and the Philly Fringe Festival, as well as Cole Porter and Gershwin Concerts with pianist Joe Benedict. Off stage, Corinne enjoys sharing her passion for music with the younger generation teaching private voice and piano lessons. She received classical and musical theatre voice training from James Madison University (2007 Bachelor of Music Degree, Music Theatre emphasis). Bruce Klauber writes, "There's nothing forced here, which is as it should be, and she fits in wonderfully with DiBussolo's understated guitar. If there's a cooler version out there than Mammana's version of Jobim's "Agua De Beber," then it just hasn't been recorded yet." Hack E-mail: Connect with Anyone, Build your Business and Brand, Become an Unstoppable Force (Hacks to Create a New Future Series Book 3)
Become an Unstoppable Force with E-mail
If you have a business or brand that you want to bring to the light, then this is the book for you.
In "Hack E-mail," I share my best strategies for turning e-mail into a marketing weapon. From e-mail outreach campaigns I've been able to:
1) Book between 40-50 podcast and radio interviews across the world, promoting my first book ("Buy Your Own Island) to a best-seller
2) Build an extensive network of mentors and affiliate partners
3) Increase my blog traffic by 400% in a one month period (from 4,262 to 16,688)
4) Connect with influential people
5) Pick up new coaching and freelance clients
Before I began to use these techniques for my own brand, I honed them in campaigns for clients. From fashion companies in Toronto to skin care lines in Malta, business owners have paid me thousands to generate leads for their business through cold e-mail. This stuff works.
The best part is, the things I've done with e-mail, anyone can do!
In this book, I lay out everything I've learned, and share my best strategies and most valuable techniques to get a response from someone and finally get the results you seek.
Among other things, you will learn:*
- How to create positive NLP "anchors" in your e-mails - so that people welcome correspondence from you (pages 26 - 27)
- 7 mistakes of horrible e-mail outreach and how to fix them (page 18)
- How to name drop your way to the top (page 31)
- How to occupy the moral high ground, and enchant people with your story (pages 28 - 30)
- What to do if someone doesn't respond - and get a response 90% of the time
- How to send follow-ups automatically - and "drip feed" your outreach (page 39)
- How to conduct professional CRM campaigns within Gmail (chapter five)
- The "Hidden in Plain Sight" technique to find the top people in any niche, and discover their address
- Plus other unconventional, but effective techniques
Plus, in this book I've included more than two dozen apps and powerful resources to make your e-mails more effective, efficient, more personable, and more powerful.
Are you ready to learn some powerful e-mail outreach techniques and become an unstoppable force?
Hope you enjoy the book.

Paula Poundstone Headlines the Golden State Theatre
The Golden State Theatre in Monterey, CA welcomes comedian Paula Poundstone on Friday, April 29th. Thirty two years ago Paula Poundstone climbed on a Greyhound bus and traveled across the country -- stopping in at open mic nights at comedy clubs as she went. She went on to become one of our country's foremost humorists. You can hear her through your laughter as a regular panelist on NPR's #1 show, a rascal of a weekly news quiz show, Wait Wait…Don't Tell Me. June of 2015 Paula lent her distinctive voice to Disney Pixar's critically acclaimed movie, INSIDE OUT. She tours regularly, performing standup comedy across the country, causing Bob Zany with the Boston Globe to write: "Poundstone can regale an audience for several hours with her distinctive brand of wry, intelligent and witty comedy." Audience members may put it a lit-tle less elegantly: "I peed my pants."
Says, Peter Sagal, Host of NPR's Wait Wait…Don't Tell Me: "People love Paula Pound-stone and they always have. The amazing thing about Paula is that she has an amazingly distinc-tive personality. You can see a lot of really, really great comedians, but you may walk away without a sense of who they really are…Paula comes out on stage and she starts talking about her life and then 20 minutes later you realize you're in the middle of her comedy act and didn't really know it."
Poundstone's ability to be spontaneous with a crowd is the stuff of legend. Poundstone says: "No two shows I do are the same. It's not that I don't repeat material. I do. My shows, when they're good, and I like to think they often are, are like a cocktail party. When you first get there, you talk about how badly you got lost and how hard it was to find parking. Then you tell a story about your kids or what you just saw on the news. You meet some new people and ask them about themselves. Then, someone says, "Tell that story you used to tell," and then someone on the other side of the room spills a drink, and you mock them. No one ever applauds me when I leave a party, though. I think they high five." Paula's interchanges with the audience are never mean or done at a person's expense.
She even manages to handle politics without provoking the pall of disapproval less artful comics receive.
Off-stage Paula Poundstone excels too. She's filed commentary on CBS Sunday Morning, and editorial pieces for NPR's All Things Considered. She has recorded two CD's: I HEART JOKES: Paula Tells Them in Boston (2013), and I HEART JOKES: Paula Tells Them in Maine (2008). An accomplished writer, with national magazine articles and a back-page column for Mother Jones magazine for several years, Paula's first hard cover book, There is Nothing In This Book That I Meant To Say, with a forward by Mary Tyler Moore, was published in November, 2006, by Harmony Books, a division of Random House. It is still in release on audio (Highbridge) and in paperback. Poundstone is also an avid reader and has been the American Library Association (ALA) National Spokesperson for United for Libraries since 2008. United for Libraries is a grass roots organizations of volunteers who work to raise much needed funds to support their local li-braries.
It has been said of Poundstone that she not only shot through the glass ceiling, she never acknowledged it was there. She was never one to stereotype herself as a 'female comedian' or limit herself to comedy from a 'female' point of view. Over the span of her career, she has amassed a list of awards and accolades that include: The first woman to win the cable ACE Award for Best Standup Comedy Special (1992); The first woman to perform standup at the White House Correspondents dinner; (1993); . She has starred in her own comedy specials on HBO and BRAVO. In fact, "Paula Poundstone Goes to Harvard," on HBO, was the only time the elite university has allowed their name to be used in the title of a television show. If it means anything to anyone, Paula is recognized as one of Comedy Central's 100 greatest stand-ups of all time. She won an American Comedy Award for Best Female Standup Comic, and in 2010 she was one of a select group voted into the Comedy Hall of Fame.
Wait Wait…Don't Tell Me is now the most popular show on NPR, having reached #1 status in 2014.

First snow in 50 years - Roswell, NM - winter 1953
First snow in 50 years - Roswell, NM - winter 1953
The album caption says "First snow in Roswell in 50 years". I don't know if that's precisely true, but I do recall that it was a HUGE deal to see snow that far south in New Mexico...
*****************************
Most of the photos in this album were taken nearly 40 years after we first moved to Roswell, as part of some research that I was doing for a novel called Do-Overs, the beginning of which can be found here on my website
www.yourdon.com/personal/fiction/doovers/index.html
and the relevant chapter (concerning Roswell) can be found here:
www.yourdon.com/personal/fiction/doovers/chapters/ch7.html
Before I get into the details, let me make a strong request — if you're looking at these photos, and if you are getting any enjoyment at all of this brief look at some mundane Americana from 60+ years ago: find a similar episode in your own life, and write it down. Gather the pictures, clean them up, and upload them somewhere on the Internet where they can be found. Trust me: there will come a day when the only person on the planet who actually experienced those events is you. Your own memories may be fuzzy and incomplete; but they will be invaluable to your friends and family members, and to many generations of your descendants.
So, what do I remember about the year that I spent in Roswell? Not much at the moment, though I'm sure more details will occur to me in the days to come — and I'll add them to these notes, along with additional photos that I'm tweaking and editing now (including some of the drive from Roswell to Riverside, CA where our family moved next), as well as some "real" contemporaneous photos I've found in family scrapbooks.
For now, here is a random list of things I remember:
1. I discovered roller skates while I lived here — perhaps aided by the presence of nice, smooth, wide sidewalks throughout this whole area of town. Sometimes my mother sent me on a small shopping expedition to the local grocery store, about two blocks away, to buy a quart of milk or a couple of other minor things. The shorts that I wore had no pockets (I have no idea why), so I put the coins that my mother gave me into my mouth, for safekeeping. That way, I had both hands free in case I tripped and fell … but if I had done so, I probably would have swallowed the coins.
2. For Christmas that year (i.e., Christmas of 1953), I was given a .22-caliber rifle. Even today, it would cause only a shrug in many rural parts of the U.S.; and it was certainly unremarkable in the 1950s. My dad felt that every boy should have a rifle, and should learn how to shoot it, clean it, and take care of it in a responsible fashion. I think his intention was to take me out into the open area outside of Roswell, to shoot at rabbits or gophers; but we ended up shooting at cans and bottles in the local dump.
3. In 1953, Roswell had not acquired any fame or attention for its proximity to the alleged alien landing in 1947. Trust me: if there had been even a hint of a rumor, the young kids in that town would have heard about it. Whatever may (or may not) have happened there . If you have no idea what this is all about, take a look at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roswell_UFO_incident
4. For young boys, it was great sport to shoot at moving creatures. Dogs and cats were considered off-limits; and as implied above, we were not allowed to wander the streets with a .22 rifle. But we all had slingshots, and there were an infinite number of lizards in the area. Unfortunately, lizard were far too quick to hit with a relatively inaccurate slingshot (especially if shot with an unevenly-shaped rock; and it was only a year later, in California, that I began shooting marbles). Our greatest success was actually with slower creatures: horned toads, usually referred to as "horny toads," or just "horns." Indeed, they were slow enough that you could capture them with bare hands. You probably have no idea what I'm talking about, so take a look at this National Geographic article: animals.nationalgeographic.com/animals/reptiles/horned-toad/

Umphrey's McGee
After 17-plus years of performing more than 100 concerts annually, releasing eight studio albums and selling more than 3.5 million tracks online, Umphreys McGee might be forgiven if they chose to rest on their laurels. But then that wouldnt be consistent with the work ethic demonstrated by the band, which consistently attempts to raise the bar, setting and achieving new goals since forming on the Notre Dame campus in South Bend, IN, in 1997. After releasing their eighth studio album, Similar Skin, the first for their own indie label, Nothing Too Fancy (N2F) Music (distributed by RED), the group continue to push the envelope and test the limits. Their brand-new studio album, The London Session, was a dream come true for the members having been recorded at the legendary Studio Two at historic Abbey Road. The stealth recording session yielded 10 tracks in a single day, proving once again, the prolific UM waits for no one.The original Umphreys McGee played a mix of originals and cover songs, waiting just eight months to release their debut album, the cheekily titled Greatest Hits Volume III. Their initial proper recording, Local Band Does OK, came out in 2002, followed shortly afterward by an appearance at the first-ever Bonnaroo in Tennessee, selling more albums than any other band on the bill. The 2007 double album, Live at the Murat, earned a four-star review in Rolling Stone and a Jammy for Best Live Album.Despite attempts at categorizing UM, the band has devoted its craft to making their devoted followers feel as if they are part of something larger, through such technology-fueled innovations as fan-curated sets, the immersive high-end audio offering, Headphones & Snowcones, where the pristine sound of the live soundboard mix is piped wirelessly through high-end personal monitor systems and headphones, as well as making every live show since 2005 available via their live music portal UMLive.net. UM were also the first group to launch its own single-artist streaming service.Last years Similar Skin saw Umphreys McGee aim to strut their rock and progressive roots, with touchstones ranging from the Police and U2 (The Linear), the Beatles (No Diablo), Nirvana (Loose Ends) and Led Zeppelin (Hindsight) to Metallica, Soundgarden and Pantera (Puppet String) and even the symphonic rock of Gentle Giant, King Crimson, Yes or Genesis (the closing nine-minute live staple, Bridgeless, finally committed to record). Every night, we have the opportunity to play whatever and however long we want, says singer/guitarist Brendan Bayliss. Going into the studio, the challenge was to be as concise as possible, to trim all the fat we could.Recorded at IV Labs in Chicago between tour dates, Similar Skin was produced by Umphreys McGee themselves as a coherent vision, featuring plenty of dynamics and contrast, with many of the songs coming from their live repertoire. Thematically, Bayliss was inspired by his own fatherhood, tackling such issues as living in the moment (The Linear), his own mortality (Cut the Cable, Hourglass), having children (No Diablo), the things that bring us together (Similar Skin), the question of whether there is a God (the Ryan Stasik slap-bass-driven Puppet String), sleep-walking (Educated Guesses), the art of storytelling and, according to Brendan, unresolved psychological issues from the past (Loose Ends).Finding themselves in London last June for three shows at the Brooklyn Bowl, the idea of recording at Abbey Road was first proposed by Umphreys producer Manny Sanchez, a notion, as Bayliss recently told Rolling Stone that seemed as likely as being asked to give a sermon at the Vatican. It wasnt a goal, he explains, because it never seemed like a possibility. But never to be bound by what seems possible, UM secured a coveted day at the worlds most famous recording studio and dove in headfirst. The first songs Umphreys McGee recorded that day were altered acoustic arrangements of Cut the Cable and No Diablo, from Similar Skin. Something we could go in and get quickly, according to Brendan.Bad Friday, a song the band debuted live in Denver the previous New Years Eve and Comma Later, a song described by Rolling Stone as smooth R&B menace with Jeff Beck-styled lead guitar was another recent original, recalling the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Wired album was also recorded at Abbey Road under its cathedral-high ceiling. It makes one note just fold over and over again, coming back around, marveled guitarist/ vocalist Jake Cinninger, who ventured into the original microphone closet, where he discovered all the Neumann and Telefunken mics The Beatles used still in pristine condition. You can hear the echo in the room. The notes keep singing operatically.Glory, Eat and Out of Order were three set-list regulars that had never been recorded for a studio release. With time still left on the clock, the band decided to cut The Beatles (I Want You) Shes So Heavy, for their own entertainment, but ultimately ending up including on the album.Twelve hours after first setting foot in Abbey Road Studios, just before midnight, Umphreys McGee left the historic room with their own new album, The London Session, what Rolling Stone dubs a historical primer, an evolution story inside 51 minutes.Youre looking at 17 years of change, says Bayliss. We managed to capture a good representation of our spectrum.Umphreys McGee are more than just a rock band through nearly two decades, they have proven to be on the cutting-edge of both music and technology, super-serving their fans through a community that stretches from the campus of Notre Dame to the hallowed halls of Abbey Road.

Often we focus on Western representations of various Middle Eastern people and in doing so we miss a vital perspective and are often given inaccurate representations. Moderator James Wellford and panelists Myriam Abdelaziz, Tamara Abdul Hadi, Laura Boushnak, Tanya Habjouqa and Alia Malek will examine the stereotypes that unfairly place a diverse group of people who practice religion differently, who dress differently, who speak different forms of Arabic, and who have different cultural traditions, into overgeneralized categories. James Wellford is a photography editor, producer, curator, and educator based in Brooklyn, New York. He is currently the Editorial Director of Visura. His collaborative work with photographers has received top honors at the Overseas Press Club, World Press Photo, POYi, American Photo, Visa Pour L'image, PX 3, and NPPA. He curates photography and multimedia shows that address topical issues in the world including most recently: American Photography (Photographic Museum of Humanity), Remembering Liberia (Photoville 2013) and Iraq 10 Years (VII Gallery). James is on the advisory board of the Photobook Museum and the organization Social Documentary Network and is the co-founder of two groups: ScreenProjects and SeenUnseen that are working on ways to create, support, and deliver powerful visual and narrative stories around the world. For 12 years he was the International Photo Editor at Newsweek Magazine. James is a Knight Wallace Fellow from the University of Michigan and a contributing photo editor to Smithsonian Journeys, Foreign Policy and CNN. Alia Malek is a journalist and civil rights lawyer. She is the author of A Country Called Amreeka: US History Re-Told Through Arab American Lives. Her reportage has appeared in several places including the New York Times, The Nation, the Christian Science Monitor, Jadaliyya, McSweeneys, and Guernica. In April 2011, she moved to Damascus, Syria and wrote anonymously for several outlets from inside the country as it began to disintegrate. She returned to the US in May 2013 for the launch of Al Jazeera America, where she was Senior Writer until October 2015. She is currently the Puffin Foundation Writing Fellow at The Nation Institute and at work on a narrative non-fiction book about Syria, a memoir of family, house, and country. Rawiya, meaning she who tells a story, is the first all-female photography collective from the Middle East, and it focuses on raising visibility of female Arab photographers as well as presents an insider view of the region. The photographers, including Myriam Abdelaziz, Tamara Abdul Hadi, Laura Boushnak, and Tanya Habjouqa, combat Western stereotypes of the Middle East. The collective's photography counters these stereotypes through depictions of an all female auto-racing team, the pleasures of daily life even in the face of political turmoil and occupation, the vibrant gay community of Beirut, portraits breaking down the hyper masculine image of the Arab man as well as portraits of empowered Middle Eastern Muslim women.

About No Tokens
No Tokens is a biannually published journal celebrating work that is felt in the spine. We are run entirely by women and non-binary people, and we are dedicated to featuring the words and artwork of all voices of the past, present, and future. We are here to keep stories alive. We are here to make a physical object to hold in your hands. We are paying attention.
Wo Chan is a queer Fujianese poet and drag performer. A recipient of fellowships from the Asian American Writers Workshop, Poets House, Kundiman, and Lambda Literary, Wo's work has been published in cream city review, Cortland Review, VYM Magazine, and elsewhere. Tony Y. Fu is presently biking between Mt. Pyre and Lilycove City. They are working toward the Rain badge and training a team strong enough to challenge the Elite Four. On weekends, they attend pilates mat classes at the Lab, a cozy fitness studio in DUMBO with complimentary towels and two gender-neutral changing rooms that always smell of flowers. We might as well start somewhere. Tonight perhaps rain and in two seasons the Perseids will arrive, meteors dragging across the sky like the finger movements of a promise made with clumsy sincerity.
