Term 2 2016 | AM Homeschool Art Classes
Over the 2015 - 2016 period, Shoalhaven City Arts Centre has had the privilege of hosting exclusive fortnightly art workshops for primary age Homeschool students . These workshops have given students rare access and insight into to arts sector and cultural project engagement with a focus on encouraging students to both work as a group and to develop their own individual language and critical thinking. The educator Timothy George is a qualified Visual Artist, Graphic Designer and Art Therapist with experience in education, public programs and special needs. 10.30AM - 12.00NOON | AGES 5 - 12 (approx.) 2nd May | Natural Geometry & Defacing the Masters Outline: Why do artists love shapes? Is a circle a sun, shape or ball? Are shapes really there at all? This week we will be looking at cubism and learning how to use shapes to help us draw, sculpt and improve our 'compositions'. We will be adding shapes to well-known paintings and for the parents that stay I will be including a parents versus kids (and me) activity so beware. Outcomes: A basic understanding of the history and key artists of the cubist technique and others. Improvement in using shapes to create abstract symbolism and to improve drawing proportion. 16th May | Mixed-Media Mosaics & Found Objects Outline: There are 'things' all around us but does any thing mean anything? This class will draw inspiration from the rich history of Mosaics and the contemporary 'Assemblages' exhibition by Randall Sinnamon. We will be looking at how artists use materials to tell stories and make illusions and how an objects 'context' changes its meaning. Outcomes: A basic understanding of the history and key artists of the Mosaic technique Improved pattern recognition and ability to work between the abstract and literal; small and big picture. 30th May | Papier Mache & 'Negative Space' Outline: Is 'negative space' really just a cranky astronaut? Let's find out! This workshop will utilise the Mental Health Fellowship exhibition, Art Therapy and simple Papier Mache techniques to explore ideas of what is in and outside as well as creating a sense of space. We will then be turning our papier mache into assemblages using the mosaic and assemblage techniques we learnt in the prvious week. Outcomes: Increased self-awareness around individual and group artmaking. Practical sculptural techniques (such as armatures) and improved spatial awareness. 20th & 27th June | Clay a.k.a Mad Hatter Tea Party! Outline: Let's build a pot and a face and a pot-face! Drawing inspiration from the colour, pattern and 'surrealism' in Sue Westaway's painting exhibition, we will be using simple pinch pot and clay coiling techniques to build and paint a wacky sculptural tea set. Outcomes: A basic understanding of traditional and contemporary pot making and clay coiling. Improved ability to draw inspiration, learn techniques and respond to other artists. * Please be advised, pending student numbers AM & PM workshops may need to be rolled into a single time slot. Parents will be notified at least one week prior.
