18 of 20 people found the following review helpful Essential book for beginners- all you need to start learning, March 22, 2009 This review is from: College of Piping Highland Bagpipe Tutor Part 1 Book and CD (Green Book) (Paperback) This book, sometimes know in the world of piping as just "the green book", is essential to anyone beginning to learn the highland pipes.
Though old, the book is accurate, thorough, and provides plenty of instruction.
I personally didn't get the CD with the book, but in retrospect I think it would have helped me along a little bit more.
This book breaks songs down into "measures", meaning one or two lines of music at a time. Before each measure the book describes any new ornaments and how to execute them. After each measure it says what to watch out for in each bar, or mistakes that students are likely to make.
Although this book is all a student needs to start learning (minus of course a quality chanter), I found that an exercise book greatly helped me get down difficult moves such as the leumluath and the double notes (or strikes).
The only downside I've found to this book is that since the songs are broken up into two, three, or sometimes four different measures, each separated by text, one can't play most entire songs through without having to turn a page or two. I solved this easily enough with creative photocopying. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews Was this review helpful to you?

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful A great primer., September 22, 2010 This review is from: College of Piping Highland Bagpipe Tutor Part 1 Book and CD (Green Book) (Paperback) This book is the standard for the piping world. I started 12 years ago using this book. After a decade's break, I ordered it to begin playing again. I have immediately begun to pick up the tunes and excercises, evidence that I was using the right material originally. A necessity for beginners and retreads like myself.
