Global Change, Local Art
Most of us have engaged with the topic of climate change primarily through facts and figures, by reading articles and hearing news stories. It's a huge subject that's challenging to grasp intellectually. By approaching the topic through art, we hope to offer our community a unique way to engage with climate change. This event is part of a series of events in April connected with EarthArt Bainbridge - a project created to explore how art inspires us to understand our impact on the natural world and encourage us to take action on climate change. Art reflects where we are as a culture, and gives us a way to understand and process difficult topics. We welcome all artists to our woods for a day exploring the impact of climate change. Photo Credit: S/He that Frees the Salmon by Deborah Milton To inspire and support your own creativity, we have a short list of suggestions for your visit. You can choose one of the ideas below, or bring supplies for your own favorite art medium. Bring your own instrument, or make music in our woods with found objects. Feel free to sing, chant or have a song in your heart as you ramble through our beautiful 255-acre forest. Create your own land art along our trails and in our meadows. Follow our custom-made map to an area where our graduate students have created Andy Goldsworthy-inspired art. You may add to this art, or work on your own nearby. Photographs encouraged! Write your own poetry. We will have several examples of styles for you, including Haiku and Cinquain. Express your feelings about climate change in the woods physically through body movement activities such as Yoga, Tai Chi, dance or others. Set up your easel or sketchpad in one of our picturesque meadows, or along Mac's Pond for plein-air (outdoor) art-making. We will have watercolor field kits for you to borrow with watercolor paint, paper, and brushes if you choose this activity. Find quietude in the forest. Leaning against an ancient tree, or a glacial erratic, you can allow your mind to be still, question or meditate as you are inspired. Reaffirm and share what you love and don't want to lose to climate change by adding a ribbon to our Climate Ribbon Tree located on our main campus. This event is brought to you in partnership with our friends at EarthArt Bainbridge (a program of Sustainable Bainbridge).
